What to Do Tonight: Grant Hart

Bridging rock’s evolutionary gap between 1970s punk and post-Pixies grunge, Hüsker Dü were one of the ’80s coolest and most influential college-radio bands. The group’s kinetic songs alternated vocal and songwriting duties between its creative core of drummer Grant Hart and guitarist Bob Mould. After Hüsker Dü’s 1987 split, Hart recorded solo and with a new band, Nova Mob, while Mould did his solo thing and formed the band Sugar. After disappearing from rock’s radar, Hart recently resurfaced with Hot Wax, his first album in 10 years. The energized and stylistically varied record fabulously reflects his finest talents, combining raw, punchy immediacy and thoughtful, layered depth. Incorporating Hüsker Dü, Nova Mob and solo material, Hart plays the Grog Shop (2785 Euclid Heights Blvd., Cleveland Hts., 216.321.5588, grogshop.gs) with Brian Strazek, the Lawton Brothers and Champion Jeff Benkoat opening at 9 p.m. Tickets: $8. — Michael David Toth
